The plastic cup looked like any other at a rugby match. It held beer like any other container and 98 per cent of its structure was chemically indistinguishable from an ordinary plastic cup. But on the side of tens of thousands of cups at Twickenham last year were the words: "This cup self-destructs."

The UK company behind the scheme has been given a further £20 million investment to develop the technology, which relies on a chemical additive that allows some plastics to break down.

The hope is that it can be used by manufacturing companies so the
